The flag of the European Union flying outside a domed neoclassical building, the Customs House. Originally constructed in 1791, it was built to the design of James Gandon. Its purpose was to house government excise officers, policing trade arriving and departing from the port of Dublin, Ireland. Today, with the expansion of the city, it is located in the city centre, by the banks of the River Liffey.
